Neck Pain and Chiropractic

Neck Pain and Chiropractic Neck pain is an extremely common problem presented to Chiropractors today, with almost 66 per cent of the population experiencing neck stiffness and pain at some point in their lives. Although discomfort may be felt in the neck it can be caused by a large number of other stressors and spinal problems.

Many patients report a constant pulling or throbbing in the neck or notice a grinding sound when they turn their heads; others find it hard to look over their shoulder. These problems may arise from muscle tightness either locally or in the upper back, from pinched nerves or joint disruption. Similarly, over time, wear and tear of back muscles can cause the natural curvature of the neck to shift and straighten which can in turn affect the brain stem and spinal cord.

Seven vertebrae form the neck, or cervical spine; the top three joints allow for most movement of the neck and head, while the lower joints in the neck and those of the upper back create a supportive structure for the head. Between these bones are discs, which cushion the bones from each other. Directly over the bones and discs are ligaments, which limit the movement of vertebra against each other. Inflammation, excessive pressure or injury to any of these parts of the cervical structure can cause significant pain.

A common response to neck pain is taking painkillers (Aspirin, Panadol or analgesics) or treating the symptoms (through massage, hot packs or relaxers). While these treatments can dull the pain for short periods of time, they fail to address the underlying issues causing discomfort and hence are ineffective over longer periods.

The chiropractic approach to treating neck pain is first to locate the primary cause of the issues and re-align the spinal structure to restore functional mobility. This can provide a much needed boost to the nervous system which is greatly affected by impaired movement. Examination of the spinal bones, nerve endings and the balance of the head and shoulders can reveal the elementary causes of neck pain and specific chiropractic adjustments can help improve the motion and position of spinal vertebrae.
