We hear it time and time again, but it seems that many parents and children still don’t listen to the warnings and the advice. Breakfast is by far the most important meal of the day.
A healthy daily breakfast can help reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Breakfast gives us the energy to get through the first part of the day, as well as helps us to focus the mind and kick the body’s functions into gear ahead of the new day.
Research has found that compared to those that eat breakfast less than three out of seven days, people who do eat a regular, nutritious breakfast, had a 35 to 50 percent lower risk of obesity and associated illness (such as insulin resistance). Alternatively, conditions that have arisen that damage overall wellbeing include high blood pressure, increased blood fats, metabolic irregularities, and high insulin levels.
Furthermore, for those who are on diets, breakfast can actually help to control appetite and overeating later in the day. However, just putting something in your mouth first thing in the morning does not equate to good health and functioning. Eating healthy, nutritional foods to boost the body’s immune and overall function is important to ensure that you’re giving yourself the best start ahead of a long day. Whole-food breakfasts, high in fiber and filled with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals are an excellent way to get you started. This means eating whole foods like muesli (as opposed to some cereals which are packed with sugars), fruit, yogurt, and nuts.
Eating a good breakfast is not good enough for overall general wellbeing. Ensuring you get regular exercise, eating healthy meals all through the day, and avoiding toxins is also important.
